The number of western meadowlarks has declined sharply in recent years (Used under license from Shutterstock.com)

Perhaps to add to the gloom and doom in the news, reports are now saying that about a third of all bird species in the US are in various states of distress. The report called “The US State of Birds” concludes that these species are either “endangered, threatened or in significant decline.” Habitat destruction and invasive species were cited as the main causes. On a brighter note, it does mention that certain populations are again on the rise. Read the full article here

    According to the book The World Without Us by Alan Weisman one billion birds are killed each year by crashing into the plate glass windows of our houses, storefronts, and skyscrapers and 60-80 million are annually killed by cars. Many more by power lines, etc if I remember correctly.
