Corporate Giants devise misleading commercials to halt proposed tax for sugar-sweetened beverages

Twisting issues through masked corporate speech that supposedly convey public protest against certain issues has become a common scenario. A recent case in point is the extensive lobbying efforts to halt proposed taxes for sugar-sweetened beverages.
The Food Tax is targeted to aid primary preventive care issues and reform the US health care system by imposing a levy for the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. This measure is designed to help curb chronic diseases and obesity due to over consumption of unhealthy food products. But the ads in the media portray the government wanting to cut into the budget of struggling families and ultimately rob them of simple pleasures such as sipping a soda.
Several companies in the beverage industry have poured millions of dollars to fund the advertising and lobbying efforts against the tax. It clearly shows that they only have one thing in mind – maximized profits without even having second thoughts on how their products could be detrimental to consumer health and the environment.
