UK-based group is upping the ante on environmentalism with its Fix the Food Chain Campaign
Posted by Murielle in Politics, 10 Nov 2009
Environmental watchdog, Friends of the Earth, is speeding up its efforts to call for fundamental changes on how the UK Government legislates with regards to the food system. With their Fix the Food Chain Campaign, they want to draw focus on intensive livestock farming and its negative impact to the environment and the global food chain.
The group demands that taxpayer’s money should be spent on projects geared towards a healthier planet, a safer climate and smarter economy by way of sustainable farming systems as alternatives to the widely accepted and highly commercialized mainstream methods that are environmentally damaging.
They also call for a review on European Trade Policies and the revision of the Sustainable Consumption and Production Strategy to hold companies and other producers accountable for the full impact of their production and global trade activities. Read the full article here

I Spy With My Non-Existing Eye…
Last month, I was lucky enough to spend some time along the more remote places of Virginia Beach. On one walk along the beach in particular, I found a lot of strange things washed up on the shore: horseshoe crabs, empty mermaid purses, and one odd-looking shell that still had other life forms attached! It goes to show that the sea is full of a great many strange creatures. Another such strange creature recently made the scientific spotlight: the sea urchin....
Nature Makes People Nicer
A recent study conducted by the University of Rochester found that after looking at nature scenes, people became nicer. They felt closer to their community and the world around them, are willing to be more generous to charities and organizations, and care more about the outcome of things. Looking at man-made structures or scenes provoked none of these feelings. The researchers believe this is because a connection with nature also helps people connect with their basic values. The study included 370...
Creature Feature: The American Burying Beetle
This week’s Creature Feature turns to a species class that many people are not exactly fond of—some people even fear them—but they deserve their turn in the spotlight all the same. The American Burying Beetle, or Giant Carrion Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus), is a critically endangered species and native to North America. They are between 25 and 45 mm in size (roughly 1 to 2 inches) and have a shiny, black body with orange-red markings. This creature is carnivorous and it’s food—and breeding...
The Cove team bust U.S. whale restaurant
Back in the headlines after a triumphant Oscar win for Best Documentary Feature, the makers of the anti dolphin slaughter and capture film The Cove have not been relaxing in the glow surrounding the awards ceremonies. According to an article in the Guardian, The Cove's director Louie Psihoyos and company have helped bust an American sushi restaurant for serving whale meat. Called The Hump, the Santa Monica, California establishment was filmed serving sei whale meat to undercover members of the crew...
More of Those Nifty Eco-Inventions: Flying Machines, Water Filters, and Portable Wind
Yes, people still are cranking out more amazing (and sometimes crazy) eco-friendly or nature-inspired designs. Inventions have ranged from household gadgets to building structures and while many of these things are still in their prototype stage, it still can give you a glimpse of what the future holds. This week has some rather interesting gizmos (to say the least) that are definitely worth checking out. Ovopur First up, we have (yet another) water filtration system. Designed by Manual Desrochers, this neat creation...
Mons Lavabo keeps flu at bay
Winter season is considered a wonderful time, because celebrations are aplenty in connection to the most popular holiday of the year – Christmas! However, the cold weather also makes winter synonymous to flu season. One way to encourage everyone, particularly kids, to stay healthy during this time is by promoting good hygiene. An example is through frequent hand washing, which keeps our hands clean and minimizes the spread of germs of diseases. Two Spain-based designers came up with bright candy-colored sinks for...
Live Sharing the Drive: Connected Commuting and Your Daily Drive
There’s no denying the fact that we live in an increasingly connected world. Finding old friends through Facebook has never been easier. Video chatting with friends or family across the world requires nothing more than a web cam and an internet connection. You’d be hard pressed to find something that we use in our daily lives that hasn’t been turned digital. Now, your commute is turning digital as well. The New Cities Foundation (NCF), a non-profit based in Paris focused on creating...
Seal and Sea Lions Shot to Death Near Seattle Include Endangered Species
Some people have no qualms when it comes to killing animals and even less so when those animals are endangered species. Last Friday, a harbor seal and at least 4 sea lions were shot to death near Seattle. One of the sea lions was an endangered species, known as the Steller Sea Lion. The others were California Sea Lions—smaller in size, but still partially protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act. Spokesman Brian Gorman, of the National Marine Fisheries Service, stated...
Mark Boyle: ‘No Money Man’ keeps on
Mark Boyle, aka No Money Man, has been living out of an old donated caravan on an organic farm outside of Bristol, England for over a year and a half. He eats well, keeps fit, grows vegetables and forages for necessities. He also keeps up a blog and occasionally writes for the Guardian. He's even written a book while he's at it. Oh, and he's lived without money the entire time. From a CNN Eco Solutions report: Although it hasn't always been easy,...
Japan: Tsunami aid used to fuel whale hunt
2.3bn yen ($29 million/ €22 million) in victims’ aid for the March 11 tsunami, which devastated communities on the northeastern coast of Japan, has been diverted to the country’s whaling industry. This discovery has sparked outrage from environmentalist groups like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd and could further damage Japan’s international reputation. Junichi Sato, executive director for Greenpeace Japan, is quoted in the Independent: Not only is the whaling industry unable to survive without large increases in government handouts, now it's siphoning money away...
