This is the House That Rock Built

Imagine when you were a kid, watching Saturday morning cartoons, and suddenly you hear that well-known yell: “WILMA!!!”. Dinosaurs, cave-people and their foot-powered cars fill the screen as they bustle about the town of Bedrock, living their lives almost like we would, with one big exception: their homes are made out of rock. One man of the Nas montanhas de Fafe in Portugal took this cartoon idea to its full potential, and created an actual home build out of rock; and not only that, he lives in it too.

Inspired by the beloved Flintstones cartoon, this house is truly eco-friendly. All of the materials that went into its making are both natural and local. The home is bordered by two boulders and then filled in with smaller stones to complete the effect. The interior of the house is comprised of rough-cut log furniture, stairs and railings, and crooked windows complete the design. And yes, it is all 100 percent real.

This home is certainly one way to take housing structures to the eco-extreme. However, it’s not the first time that the media may be responsible for an eco-home inspiration. A few years ago, a home was created in Wales that could easily have been based off of the Hobbit homes in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. Personally, I wouldn’t  mind living in a home like that myself!
