Zero waste with biodegradable plastic
Posted by Murielle in Science & Technology, sustainable living, 31 Oct 2009
Creative Review, a UK-based visual communications magazine is making use of a revolutionary packaging material that dissolves in water. They are the first magazine to test-drive Cyberpac’s experimental packaging solution called “harmless-dissolve “.
Made from hydro-degradable substrate, the material is lighter and five times stronger than normal polythene yet it is non-toxic so you can toss it in a compost pit and will be degraded by micro-organisms like moulds and yeast. In the end, it just becomes carbon dioxide, water and biomass.
Cyberpac’s whole range of harmless packaging products have been subjected to stringent testing to guarantee that it is truly environment friendly. As mentioned at their website “This is the future of packaging; here today, gone tomorrow leaving no discernable trace – Harmless.” Read the full article here

The Vegetarian Spiders of Mexico
They only eat plants and their males may even help look after the kids. No, they’re not Californian soccer dads, they’re Mexican spiders. Central America’s jumping spider, or Bagheera kiplingi – named for a character in Kipling’s Jungle Book – outwits and outmaneuvers a wasp-like species of ant, which guard acacia bushes in a symbiotic relationship that the jumping spiders don’t participate in. They just want to eat the sweet leaves of the shrub and then jump somewhere else. Of...
Major oil disaster in China’s Yellow Sea
Friday’s oil pipeline explosion in the northern Chinese port of Dalian has resulted in a large oil slick in the Yellow Sea. The oil leaking from the two exploded pipelines has been stopped, but not before oil washed up on the coastline, soiling surrounding beaches and negatively impacting local wildlife and economic activity. Thousands of firefighters, engineers and even a flotilla of 800 fishing boats are involved in cleanup operations which have already reduced the oil slick by a third from...
Russian Oil and Gas Company Rosneft To Further Imperil Endangered Gray Whale
Western Gray Whales are already perilously close to extinction, but Rosneft will pursue their seismic surveys despite the well-publicized risks Russia's good news - that the country plans to set aside huge swaths of land for conservation - has been surpassed by a deluge of subsequent bad news. Heat waves led to fistfuls of citizens succumbing to vodka-induced drownings, and then this last week devastating fires have destroyed forests and left Moscow saturated in smoke. Against this backdrop of environmental and...
Undercover Stint Reveals Japan is Bribing Nations to Receive Pro-Whaling Support
Thanks to a recent stint pulled by some undercover reporters it would appear that the Japanese whalers are continuing their course aboard a sinking ship (so to speak). According to the Sunday Times, Japan has bribed a number of small nations in attempt to earn their support at the upcoming IWC meeting. Undercover reporters pretended to be representatives of a Swiss billionaire conservationist and approached officials from pro-whaling nations, offering them a special package if they changed their votes. During negotiations, many...
Superbug factories: Industrial meat and dairy farms could be the death of us all
No matter if you eat a 5 pounds of meat per day or are a strict vegan, intensive livestock farming is putting your life at risk. This is due to the routine and preemptive use of large amounts of antibiotics on factory farms, which contributes to the evolution resistant strains of bacteria like MSRA. In the US, MSRA is believed to be killing more people than AIDS. For years the medical profession has come under criticism for overprescribing antibiotics or doling...
California: Solar farms pit govt against native tribes
A fast track approach by the US government towards certain renewable energy projects has drawn lawsuits and protests from some Native American groups and environmentalists in California. US President Barack Obama has set a goal of sourcing 80% of the country’s electricity from clean projects, but some of the projects are on lands considered sacred to Native American tribes. Environmental groups are also concerned that the projects could hard sensitive desert ecology. Government officials claim to have consulted tribal organizations and have...
UK govt shelves proposed regulations on coal and gas plants
The ‘greenest government ever’ is at it again. The UK’s coalition government headed by Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy PM Nick Clegg has been cutting a lot of green programs and departments in the name of efficiency and belt-tightening. Now they are shelving one of their own environmental plans to regulate coal and gas power plants, a measure they claimed could be implemented upon taking office. From a report in the Guardian: Introducing a so-called "environmental performance standard" (EPS) for power companies would...
Q: I’ve heard eating less meat and dairy products could help the environment. How?
A: The environmental impact of meat and dairy products is a complex problem. The livestock industry is damaging our planet in many ways. It is polluting the air – according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization report, it generates more greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2 (18%) and methane, than the whole world’s transport (13,5 %). It is polluting the water – gigantic containers called “lagoons”, where livestock animals’ manure and urine are stored, may leak or even break under heavy...
Maldives Government Takes Climate Change Action Below Sea Level
The lowest nation on Earth went completely underwater last week; well, their government did, for a cabinet meeting. President Mohammed Nasheed and 13 other government officials threw on their scuba gear, took their chairs, desks and papers with them, and conducted the meeting through the use of hand signals. The purpose of this underwater event was to draw international attention to the seriousness of Global Warming, particularly to the Maldives itself. "What we are trying to make people realize is that...
Video: Orca attacks school of sharks
A killer whale (orca) was caught on film hunting sharks at a New Zealand beach. One sizable shark was driven onto the sand by the orca, where a local dog began circling and barking at it. The story has been reported by several news agencies, using the amateur footage, but leave it to ITN News to include the best bits – particularly the part with the dog. Killer whales are intelligent, skilled hunters and sit at the top of the marine food...
