Poll shows nearly 50% of American consumers inclined towards buying ‘green’ handsets

Results of a recent major survey conducted among 1,000 American adults shows that although almost half of them are committed in principle to using environment friendly mobile phones, they are not quite ready to pay a premium to make the total switch.

So what’s the catch then? Cell Phones with recyclable components can be slightly more expensive compared to conventional phones. Consumers gauge key factors such as price, built-in features and performance to evaluate if green handsets are indeed more practical and at par with mainstream mobile models.

It is also more costly for mobile phone manufacturers to create a truly green handset because major modifications have to be made in the whole productions process. And these changes would affect their entire supply chain.

But the law can be the main catalyst to implement these changes. Currently, the European Union has enforced stringent regulations targeting progressive manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Both the government and the consumers should be more vigilant and discerning when choosing which products to support. After all, there is a huge difference between upholding eco-friendly production standards versus being merely compliant with the law. Read the full article here
