British scientists map climate change

The government of the United Kingdom’s Met Office has just released a pretty wicked looking interactive climate change map. Besides being a slick example of computer design, the map is chock full of info. One can click on several ‘hotspots’ for information, zoom in and out, and hide or highlight areas such as draught, health, permafrost and forest fire. There are also plenty of neat pop-out tabs with explanations about the Amazon, the carbon cycle and rises in sea level and temperature. But wait, there’s more! The map is explained and elaborated on in clear terms on the Met Office website.

Despite the map’s pretty graphics and neat-o factor, it shows some pretty horrific consequences projected by scientists if the world does not take serious action to mitigate climate change. High among these consequences are future water and food shortages. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and his brother Ed Miliband, the Climate Change Secretary, launched the map on Thursday, October 22nd.

It is based on peer-reviewed science from the Met Office’s Hadley Centre and other ‘leading impact scientists’. Read more about the map and the Hadley Centre’s findings in this October 22nd article by Michael McCarthy, environment editor for the U.K.’s Independent newspaper.
