Safety and fuel efficiency: Hitting two birds with one stone

Mexico – Road bumps which were once thought of as an inconvenience among drivers are actually beneficial, not only for safety but for fuel efficiency as well. Such was not the case when the Mexico City Autonomous University conducted a study in 2006 and found that constant acceleration and deceleration caused by speed bumps resulted in increased fuel consumption and more pollutants. So it was agreed that maintaining a slow and steady speed is more environment-friendly.
To turn things around, Decano Industries from Toluca is developing what they call a smart speed bump. This device measures the force of impact from an incoming vehicle and immediately collapses if the car is traveling within the speed limit and translates to lesser hassle for law-abiding motorists; otherwise, it just stays in place.
