A challenge on corporate responsibility: Apple ditches US Chamber of Commerce, who will follow suit?

Corporate giant, Apple, withdrew its membership from the US Chamber of Commerce recently because they are in disagreement with the group’s stance on environment-related issues. In question is the chamber’s use of funds to oppose climate change legislation particularly on regulating greenhouse gases.
Most progressive businesses know emissions cuts are inevitable and are gearing up to help lead the global economy to a prosperous, low-carbon future. Although many member companies within the Chamber of Commerce already expressed their support for legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the significant amount of money they contribute annually is being used to lobby for the exact opposite.
It’s high time to change the chamber’s policies on the environment, and who else is in better position to initiate these changes but the members themselves. Read the full article here

Update: UK ban on circus animals looks good to go
In May we ran a couple of posts on how Britons overwhelmingly support a ban on circus animals, yet the UK’s Conservative-led government was against any such ban. The Tory-Lib Dem coalition government, led by Prime Minister David Cameron (an avid hunter) instead proposed a licensing scheme for circuses. However, members of British parliament, including key Conservatives, have stood up to pressure from the Prime Minister and voted to ban wild animals in UK circuses. Though the motion voted on does not in...
Radiation fears top concerns in Japan earthquake/tsunami disaster
Japan has suffered greatly in recent days after a 9.0 earthquake struck the north of the country and triggered a tsunami which destroyed countless homes and likely killed over 10,000 people. Millions have been left without electricity, while food and water scarcity as well as lack of heat are threatening parts of northern Japan. Most of the media, however, has been gripped by the explosions and resultant radiation leaks at three reactors at a Japanese nuclear power plant called Fukushima Daiichi...
Brazilian govt approves Amazon hydroelectric dam construction
To the disappointment of environmental and indigenous rights groups, the construction of a massive hydroelectric dam in the Amazon rainforest has been green-lighted by the Brazilian environmental ministry. The Belo Monte dam project on the Amazon's Xingu River will be the world's third largest project of its kind. The hydroelectric dam is part of a government initiative to fuel economic expansion while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Yet many see the Belo Monte project as destructive – both to the fragile...
Calling all bloggers: post about climate change TODAY
Today, October 15th is this year’s Blog Action Day and the subject for 2009 is ‘Climate Change’. You needn’t have a blog that is normally environmentally themed, just relate a Green topic to your blog’s subject. Of course you can write about hard- hitting issues like global warming, pollution, famine and war if you are so inclined, but the goal is to get as many blogs as possible mobilized on one day in order to promote awareness of climate change...
Corporate Giants devise misleading commercials to halt proposed tax for sugar-sweetened beverages
Twisting issues through masked corporate speech that supposedly convey public protest against certain issues has become a common scenario. A recent case in point is the extensive lobbying efforts to halt proposed taxes for sugar-sweetened beverages. The Food Tax is targeted to aid primary preventive care issues and reform the US health care system by imposing a levy for the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. This measure is designed to help curb chronic diseases and obesity due to over consumption of...
Space news: Oceans on Mars, the apocalypse from above and no more men on the Moon
Scientists at the university of Colorado have discovered evidence that suggests that much of Mars was once covered by ocean. From an article by Australia's ABC News: To test their theory Dr Hynek and Mr Di Achille used global databases of known deltaic deposits and valley networks, together with topography data from a laser altimeter aboard NASA's Mars Observer spacecraft which is orbiting the red planet. If Mars had that much water 3.5 billion years ago, what happened to it? And did it...
How to Survive Natural Disasters
Every year, thousands of people are killed by violent acts of nature. This year, we’ve already seen earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and volcano eruptions. Even with warning systems in place, people still fall victim to nature’s wrath. Perhaps they were unprepared or tried to play the hero. Most likely, they were misinformed or simply didn’t know what to do during such an event. I have compiled some basic information on what to do when severe weather or forces of nature are heading...
Silent Summer – Sir David Attenborough lends weight to book on destruction of UK ecosystems
A new major environmental book, entitled Silent Summer: The State of Wildlife in Britain and Ireland, offers up disturbing facts and figures about the human impact on nature in the British Isles. Celebrated naturalist, broadcaster and national treasure Sir David Attenborough has penned the forward to the book, a collaborative effort by 40 UK ecologists, which outlines the impacts of pesticides, population growth and intensive farming on British and Irish flora and fauna. The 600-page book, edited by Norman Maclean, emeritus...
Nottingham beats out London as England’s greenest transport city
The top cities in England for green transport include Nottingham, London, Brighton, Hove and Manchester. Nottingham came out top in a study of UK cities that gauged the East Midlands town to be the least dependent on cars and have the best public transport. The CBT, a green lobby group, judged the cities on accessibility and planning; quality and availability of public transport; and how pedestrian and cyclist friendly they are. From a report by the Press Association: The findings showed that in many...
