The naked truth – volunteers strip off to convey their message on climate change

Numerous efforts have been made to elicit publicity and drive home the message that we need to take action to stop global warming. Of late, seven hundred men and women volunteered to pose nude in a French vineyard to warn people about the dangers of global warming. This human art installation was initiated by artist Spencer Tunick.
An open letter from Greenpeace, addressed to our world leaders, was also sent out. It highlights how countless people will go to great lengths to make those who are in power notice and take positive action towards saving our planet. Read the full article here

UK: World’s largest offshore wind farm opens off Kent
Generally considered to lag far behind many other European countries when it comes to generating renewable energy – in the EU only Malta and Luxembourg produce proportionally less – the UK has just opened the biggest offshore wind farm in the world. The opening of the Thanet wind power project, located off the coast of Kent, means that in one fell swoop, Britain now produces more power from offshore wind than the rest of the world put together. Even larger wind...
Awesome New Gecko Species Discovered in Cambodia
Lately, it seems the news has been plagued with nothing but bad reports. Endangered species are on the decline, animals aren’t getting the protection they need. Fortunately, most clouds at least have a silver lining. Members of the conservation group Fauna and Flora International (FFI) discovered a new gecko species in the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains. The gecko was named Cnemaspis neangthyi, after the head of FFI’s Cardamom Mountains Research Group, Neang Thy. The Cardamom Mountains are home to quite the...
Global protests: Are the good guys finally winning?
Protests movements often have trouble gaining the sympathies of the masses of people whom they actually represent. Corporate media, bragging politicians, the well-funded propaganda of big business and a pervading desire of most people to maintain the status quo (or at least not rock the boat) usually win out over principals of fairness, equality and even the self-interest of the masses themselves. My inner conservative (read: cynic) thinks that the middle classes as well as the ‘relatively comfortable poor’ will usually choose...
The winners and losers of carbon trading
While carbon trading may serve to limit overall emissions, how does it affect local pollution? A Time Magazine article from last December explores arguments against the UN's carbon trading scheme, known as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) including its susceptibility to manipulation by national or local governments. It also may outsource pollution. Take this case in India: "Since the plant has come, the village's water supply is polluted, and the air is polluted from the dust and smoke," says KSL Swamy, the...
Danish climate report sees nation fossil fuel-free by 2050
A new Danish report states that the Scandinavian country could produce all of its energy without fossil fuels within 40 years. The report, by the government of Denmark’s climate commission, cites the rising cost of oil and gas coupled with the lowering prices of renewable energy. From an article in the Guardian: The report will also send a very clear and important signal to other countries that wind is a sustainable source of energy for future development. This is a great opportunity to...
Breaking News: Eastern Canada Struck by 5.0-Magnitude Earthquake; Tremors Felt In Several US States
An earthquake hit eastern Canada today. Yes, Canada. The 5.0 magnitude quake struck along the Ontario-Quebec border region around 1:41 PM EST, at a depth of approximately 12 miles (19.2). Tremors lasted about 30 seconds, shaking homes and businesses, but there are no reports of injuries or damages. A number of businesses in the Ottawa area were also evacuated. Apparently, the tremors could also be felt in several US states, including: Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West...
Dengue for the UK?
It’s coming some time and maybe… The Asian tiger mosquito originates in hot and muggy South East Asia. But international trade, tourism and (increasingly) climate change will enable the tropical disease-carrying insect to establish itself in northern Europe, including the UK. Reports last September from the US told of how the smaller, but more aggressive Asian tiger mosquito was causing problems in the states of California, Texas, Florida and Hawaii; and cities including Memphis, New Orleans and Washington DC. In Europe, the Asian...
Will rechargeable batteries make South America the new Middle East?
Lithium-ion batteries are being touted by US President Barack Obama as the most efficient way to electrify motor vehicles. A mass shift from fossil fuel and conventional combustion engines towards battery-powered electric cars may also receive a boost due to the unfortunate recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. From an article on stockhouse.com: In 2009, alone, the U.S. federal government granted over US$25 billion in loans to automobile and battery makers. Such initiatives promise to help President Obama accomplish his well-publicized mandate...
Classic Car Makeover: The MGB-EV
When he first bought the 1972 MGB roadster back in 1984 in order to restore it, Dr. Roger Dougal probably never thought it would take more than 20 years before he actually started his project. The University of South Carolina Engineering Professor handed the car over to his students as a class project. They began rebuilding the classic car, but not just replacing the old engine, but giving it new life as an electric car. The students, some of who...
Italy to clean up Naples or EU to sanction
Last Saturday, the European Commission threatened Italy with fines and sanctions if the 2,400 tons of garbage that has been left on the streets of Naples after the last garbage war does not get cleaned up. The residents of the nearby town of Terzigno, just outside of Naples, have been violently protesting for over a week, as a reaction to the smell and filth pile up from a local dumpsite. They are planning to open a new trash-dumping site in a...
