Arrr Pirates Responsible for Global Warming?

Today marks the 14th annual International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Did you know that the decline in piracy is responsible for global warming, earthquakes and other natural disasters? At least, it is according to the parody religion of Pastafarianism (aka The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster).

In 2005, Bobby Henderson created the Pastafarianism religion as a satirical response to the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education that would require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution in public schools. The central belief of this parody religion is that an invisible and undetectable Flying Spaghetti Monster is responsible for the creation of the entire universe, after much heavy drinking.

The piracy portion of Pastafarianism states that pirates are “absolute divine beings” who distributed candy to small children. Henderson even went to the extent of creating a chart to show that as the number of pirates decreased from the 1800s, global temperatures started to increase. He also includes additional article information that also talks of possible connections between piracy and global warming. What’s more, in 2008, with the growing Somalian pirate activities throughout the Gulf of Aden, Henderson pointed out that Somalia has “the highest number of Pirates AND the lowest Carbon emissions of any country”.

Coinciding with the annual pirate holiday is a number of environmental events. This weekend also marks the Clean Up the World event, International Coastal Cleanup event and the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Fair; all of which are doing their part to help the environment and continue the fight against global warming.

Whether or not there is any real connection between the decline in piracy and rise in global warming, or if it’s mere coincidence remains to be seen. I find it amusing that there are events held for both subjects on the same day, though. If you decide to attend one of the environmental events today, or do your own part to help the earth, be sure to throw in a loud, hearty ARRR on occasion. You never know when a divine pirate being may praise you for your work.
