Mark Your Calendars for the Global Climate Wake-Up Call
Posted by Murielle in Climate Change, 15 Sep 2009
On September 21st, four of the largest environmental groups – Avaaz, Oxfam, Greenpeace and 360.org will be holding one of the biggest global environmental protests calling for solutions to climate change. Called the Global Wake-Up Call, the groups have arranged simultaneous gatherings and actions, making their message clear: Global warming must be stopped now. People from all over the world can participate by joining flash mobs in their areas and sounding their cell phone alarms or bombarding their government offices with phone calls to get their leaders’ attentions. Over 350 events have been organized worldwide, spanning 54 countries. This action is set less than 3 months before the Copenhagen Climate Summit, which will see leaders from all over the world sit down to discuss the important issues on global warming. Solar powered Spain
Solar power is a hot project in sunny Spain. Outside of Seville you'll find the world's first commercial solar tower, which appears like a modernist church spire surrounded by an adoring flock of robotic minions. The minions are in fact mirrors – or heliostats – which reflect sunlight onto a receiver located at the top of the monolithic tower. A CNN article explores the PS 10 and forthcoming PS 20 solar power tower projects in Spain: Each heliostat measures 120 square meters,...
IWC’s Latest Whaling Proposal Vexes All Sides
The IWC definitely has its hands full with the whole whaling issue. Unfortunately for them, they can’t seem to make anyone happy. If they completely eliminate whaling altogether, the environmentalists will be happy, but the whalers won’t be. If they allow more whaling (but under stricter limits), neither the environmentalists nor the whalers will be happy. What, exactly, are they to do? Their current proposal would allow Iceland, Japan and Norway to hunt whales for 10 years, but under stricter limits...
European Space Agency launches satellites to assess climate change impact on Earth’s water systems
On Monday, November 2nd, two satellites were launched into orbit by the ESA or European Space Agency in order to give an overall view of the Earth's water systems and their patterns. Named the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Proba-2, the satellites blasted off from Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia. SMOS's mission is the measuring of 'water retention capacity in soil to help forecast drought and flood risk and calculate the planet's carbon cycle to determine the amount...
Compare Your Country’s Emissions Target to Others via Sandbag
In the past few months leading up to COP15 (and even in the past several years) you may have heard or seen mentioning of different countries and their proposed target emissions. Some countries’ CO2 emissions have skyrocketed, while others have kept themselves on the greener side of the fence. If you are wondering how your own country measures up when compared to others, you can find out. How? Well, head over to Sandbag and check out their Carbon Emissions Target...
China Plans to Combat Water Pollution with 20 Million Fish
China is known for many things, ranging from the Great Wall to the Giant Panda. It’s also known to be one of the top polluters in the world; though that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing something about it. Eastern China authorities plan to release 20 million algae-eating fish into the Taihu Lake. This particular lake is severely polluted with sewage, industrial and agricultural waste. Last February, a previous attempt in using fish to clean up the lake was made. At that...
Videos: Activists oppose mining projects in Ecuador, UK
A rainbow coalition of indigenous groups and social/political activists recently hit the streets of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, in protest of large-scale mining projects approved by the country’s president Rafael Correa. Correa praised the Chinese mining project, claiming they will bring 50,000 jobs and billions in revenue. Though Correa is popular in Ecuador, the project is facing opposition. Ecuador has already suffered a massive oil spill in the Amazon region, and some 50% of the country is already covered by mining and...
New York Harbor – what’s in the water?
Lots of pollution and chemicals, of course! Anyone who has ever visited New York and strolled down by the water has probably seen and smelled that. But that’s not all, folks. Not by a long shot. In a piece for New York magazine dated May 9th of this year, Christopher Bonanos explores what fascinating, scary and downright weird things lie beneath the dark and toxic waters around New York City. Did you know? A 10,500-mile (17,000 km) long gas main runs all the...
Mexico-City, Amsterdam, Paris and Zagreb… what do these cities have in common?
These four capitals are the first to sign up for the 10:10 climate campaign and to pledge to cut their carbon emissions by 10 percent in 2011. The 10:10 campaign, which we have talked about extensively on this website (do a search and you’ll get the big picture), is active in forty countries. 3.000 businesses and 100.000 individuals worldwide already signed up to the climate campaign. Paris was the first city to come up with green changes. Social housing is being renovated,...
Deep-sea census yields 17,000 new species
Life in the deep sea is just as weird and wonderful as any alien creatures from outer space that our imaginations might conjure up, a massive study of marine biology shows. Comprising of some 210 expeditions spanning ten years by over 300 scientists from 34 nations, the international Census of Marine Life is in fact the culmination of 'hundreds of years of research'. Very little is known about ocean life when compared to the eco-systems on land, especially the deep,...
COP17 – What’s the deal?
A last minute deal at COP17, the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, managed to secure a legally binding global treaty, even amongst those most reluctant to sign on: big polluters the US, China and India. But what does the deal entail and is it really any good? First of all, the treaty is to be signed in 2015 and enforced in 2020 – too little too late according to environmentalists and most climate scientists. But what the hell do...
