Cheetahs: Still the Fastest Mammal on Earth
Once again, cheetahs have proven that nothing can out run them.
Sarah, an 8-year-old cheetah from The Cincinnati Zoo, recently beat the land speed record not once, but twice! A South African male cheetah held the 100 meter record at 6.19; however, Sarah was clocked in at 6.16 and 6.13 seconds. The run was completed on a course at Cincinnati Zoo’s Regional Cheetah Breeding Facility, and involved chasing a lure similar to greyhound racing. For an animal that’s been raised in captivity most of her life, I’d say a record-breaking feat is pretty impressive!
Due to Sarah’s accomplishment, she will be pitted against another female cheetah from South Africa, named Zaza. There have been many attempts at having cheetahs break the world speed record over the years, including a previous record holder and late resident of the Cincinnati Zoo, Moya. The speed attempts are made to draw attention to the severe problems that cheetahs face. African Cheetahs are currently listed as threatened or vulnerable by the IUCN as well as on the US Endangered Species Act. Asiatic Cheetahs, such as those found in Iran, are unfortunately listed at a critically endangered status, with less than 100 left in the wild.
It may be some time before the speed record is broken again, but whoever said cheetahs never win, certainly did not know Sarah.

Since the cheeta is a female who beat a record previously held by a male, and from South Africa no less (!) I demand a test to confirm its gender. BTW where the heck in Cincinnati are these cheetahs racing?
