Green start-up Anellotech was given the go-signal to begin producing various fuels and other chemical materials from biomass. The Huberis process, which was developed at The University of Massachusetts Amherst, uses catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) to produce useable biomass gases and fuels. This technology was designed by a faculty member, George Huber, and is also the co-founder of Anellotech.

Unlike the conventional production of biomass fuels, the CFP quickly processes the materials to create a liquid that simulates gasoline. In fact, the final product is so similar to conventional fuel that users will be unable to tell the difference. Says George Huber, “Anything you can make from crude oil, in the next 10 to 20 years we can make from biomass. One of the beauties of biofuel is that the products are indistinguishable from those derived from petroleum oil today. People are going to pull up to the gas station and pump fuel produced with this clean, green technology in their cars without necessarily being aware of it. All the changes will be made on the front end, at the biorefinery. Rather than refining crude oil weíre going to be refining renewable biomass.” Anellotech has big plans for their technology and, after raising some Series A venture capital, they will begin designing and building their first biomass plant and have it running by 2014.
