Ford unveils “Intelligent” system for plug-in Hybrid Cars
Posted by Murielle in Science & Technology, 23 Aug 2009
Ford together with its partners is testing a first in the car industry: vehicle-to-electric grid communications and control systems. These systems should enable electric vehicles to interface with the grid for optimal recharging. Included in the communications and control systems is the ability to program when to recharge the vehicle, for how long and at what utility rate. In 2010 Ford is to introduce a pure battery electric Transit Connect commercial van, alongside with a battery electric Focus compact car in 2011, and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2012. Ford’s aim is to eventually equip all of it’s 21 fleet plug-in hybrid Escapes with the vehicle-to-grid communications technology. Read the full article here

World’s Largest Tiger Sanctuary Created in Myanmar!
Good news for tigers: the world’s largest tiger sanctuary is now open in Myanmar! The Hukaung Valley Tiger Reserve is actually more than tripling the size of a tiger sanctuary already in place, and is now believed to take up the entire Hukaung Valley, which covers almost 8,450 square miles (21,970 square km). A sanctuary this big could hold up to several hundred tigers, but thanks to poaching, there may be less than 50 of these big cats left in the...
Will rechargeable batteries make South America the new Middle East?
Lithium-ion batteries are being touted by US President Barack Obama as the most efficient way to electrify motor vehicles. A mass shift from fossil fuel and conventional combustion engines towards battery-powered electric cars may also receive a boost due to the unfortunate recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. From an article on stockhouse.com: In 2009, alone, the U.S. federal government granted over US$25 billion in loans to automobile and battery makers. Such initiatives promise to help President Obama accomplish his well-publicized mandate...
Bees Recognize Facial Patterns as ‘Strange Flowers’
Have you ever had a bee fly around your head, or perhaps hover momentarily in front of your face? You may be surprised to know that the reason is not necessarily that they view us as a threat, or even as a person, but that they see us as “strange flowers”. A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, found that bees can learn to recognize human faces (or at least face patterns). It basically suggests that insects are...
Update: Gunman at Discovery Channel Headquarters Killed by Police
Today, a man entered the Discovery Channel Headquarters near Washington, D.C. and held 3 people hostage at gunpoint. The man also had canisters strapped to his body that were suspected to be explosives of some kind. After several hours of negotiations, one thing led to another and the gunman ended up shot to death by the police. The shots detonated one of the devices strapped to his body, but it is still unknown whether the others were explosive or not. All...
Video: Brazilian parrot conservation in the Middle Eastern desert
At a former farm in the Arab emirate of Qatar, a nearly extinct species of Brazilian parrot is being bred in order to preserve and eventually repopulate the breed in its native habitat over 10,000 kilometers away. The Spix's Macaw is a type of parrot native to the state of Bahia in northwest Brazil. The Spix's has been considered extinct in the wild since 2000, after years of hunting, trapping and habitat destruction. Al Wabra Wildlife Preserve is privately funded by a...
Cat lovers vs. conservationists
The ongoing spat between crazy cat people and tree-hugging fanatic eco-fascists has reared its ugly head yet again. What I mean to say is that a recent article by one variety of animal-lover has rekindled a debate between conservationists and cat lovers. Back in mid March the Orlando Sentinel published an op-ed by Audubon Magazine editor “at large” Ted Williams, which put forth that feral cats should be trapped and euthanized – for reasons of conservation and human health – in...
Toads sense earthquake days in advance
Dogs, rodents, fish and snakes have been observed reacting to earthquakes, sometimes several days before they occur. Now we can add toads to the list of animals that can 'predict' seismic activity. A British study on toads in Italy shows strong evidence that the amphibians can detect earthquakes days before they happen. According to a report from BBC News, toads that were being studied in L'Aquila, Italy last year produced no spawn during an earthquake period, which begins at the main...
Dateline NBC meets New York’s ‘ECO cops’
Meet New York State Police's Environmental Conservation Officers. For their 'Green is Universal' coverage, NBC's Dateline follows two green-clad cops who enforce environmental law on the streets of New York City. But these ECO Police are no new green trend – NBC's Chris Hansen reports that they've 'been around for over a century'. A police force that once concentrated on fish and game regulations now also tackles issues such as pollution and food sanitation in America's biggest and busiest city,...
Climate change isn’t fun: David Mitchell’s Soap Box
Last week I posted Bill Maher’s recent rant on climate change denial. Now it’s comedian, occasional columnist and star of Peep Show David Mitchell’s turn to vent on climate change, which he does so in his regular Guardian video feature ‘David Mitchell’s Soap Box’. As usual with anything related to climate change in the Guardian, there is a full complement of argumentative statements in the comment section following the video. I like the suggestion by one commenter that we should stop ironing...
Mexican Gray Wolf Considered for Separate Endangered Species Act Listing
The Mexican Gray Wolf may finally be getting the much needed protection it deserves. Earlier this year, WildEarth Guardians filed a lawsuit against the US Fish and Wildlife service in an attempt to force the agency to issue a finding. This past week, a federal judge in Arizona approved a settlement that requires the agency to issue a finding by the end of July. This finding is based on a petition that seeks to obtain an endangered species listing for the...
